Why did ReadingAnimals go silent?

Things have been quiet for the last week or so.  Why?  It wasn’t for lack of something to say, but somehow I ended up with the same spam comments on every post on the blog every single night.  Rather than struggle with that over and over, I decided to shut comments down and stop posting til I could get it under control again.  Stop gap measure in place - but human detector / more formal measures to be implemented soon.
