Rescued elephants returned to forest home

By Debra Durham • Jun 15th, 2008 • Category: Elephants

The Month of Elephants series has covered a wide range of topics, but good news is scarce these days. That’s why I was especially pleased to see this recent news from Sri Lanka. I mentioned Sri Lanka in a prior post about elephants who were casualties of war and human-elephant conflict.  Good news definitely needed in light of that, eh?   Elephants rescued from “near certain death” have been rehabilitated and released back into a protected forest.

Minimised contact with people and an opportunity to live and recover in a semi-wild environment were key components of the approach to rehabilitation used in this program, which has been operating for about 10 years.

Photos from the release. Welcome home!
