Reflecting on the Month of Elephants Series
By Debra Durham • Jun 21st, 2008 • Category: EssaysThe Month of Elephants series was a series that I initiated back in May out of my frustration with the rhetoric of institutions that exploit and harm elephants. As this project has finally come to a close, I wanted to take a moment to reflect on the series.
The series included posts on how we think about elephants, the ways in which elephants live their lives and, sometimes, their suffering. We also looked at practices that influence human-elephant relations, especially in cases where those relations are rife with conflict. There were posts about elephants in the wild and in captivity. In addition to covering the arts - books, film and live performance, we also took a look at science as a tool for knowing and protecting elephants.
I enjoyed writing the series very much and appreciated what the comments and ensuing dialogue added to the mix. Elephants will surely continue to inspire posts at ReadingAnimals. Please watch for them.
