Pimps disguised as guardians

By Debra Durham • Jul 18th, 2008 • Category: Elephants

Since the Month of Elephants series came to a close, I’ve been intentionally keeping topics broad to balance the overall “portfolio” of topics here at ReadingAnimals. I’m making an exception today to make a quick post about the betrayal of elephants by organizations claiming to be or legally mandated to be their protectors. In short, these organizations have turned out to be pimps disgused as guardians.

As you may have heard, CITES recently decided to allow the sale of ivory to China (and Japan). It is just too much to think that the government-endorsed elephant genocide in South Africa is going to happen at precisely this same time. How marvelously convenient for SA, poachers and criminal elements dealing in wildlife products.

The sources of support for this myopic and deadly decision are disappointing. EthicsandAnimals.com has a summary post on the ivory sale decision that is full of great links that will bring readers up to speed quickly. I’d already given up on WWF, but there is a difference between not doing a good job and actively encouraging their decimation.

  1. very good name for CITES. They are pimps posing as guardians. Monsters.

  2. This is a horrendous act of betrayal, using the term “Pimps” to describe CITES is being far too polite.

I thought of a few other names…choice names…and I’m can sure you can guess what they were like.
