Have you ever read The Salamander Room? It's a wonderful children's picture book about animal conservation. Little boy wants to keep a salamander as a pet. His mom responds with questions: where will he eat, sleep, etc., pointing out all the things salamanders need. The little boy imagines transforming his room to meet the salamander's needs and at the end his room is basically a forest. It has gorgeous illustrations, and although the point is made very gently, it's a great starting point for discussion.
Reply - <a href="#" class="quote" onclick="quote('110','Julie','Have you ever read The Salamander Room?
Looks great! I have a special fondness for bonobos after writing a paper about them in college. Maybe your next "animal of the month" could be chimps? Hint, hint. ;-)

@Kristi -My thanks to you for putting together such a great challenge! I'm always on the look out for science reads, too.

Off the top of my head, I can think of several books that frame the kinship between humans and other primates in terms of genetic similarity to greater and lesser degrees - for example "What it means to be 98% chimpanzee in the case of the former and Next of Kin in the case of the latter.

Thanks again! The entire challenge is relevant ot the theme of hte blog so I expect I'll be writing and linking often.
Reply - <a href="#" class="quote" onclick="quote('98','Debra Durham','@Kristi -My thanks to you for putting together such a great challenge!
I'm so glad you're joining the challenge! You have some intriguing books on your list (the parrot one especially speaks to me for some reason. I'm not sure why, I don't own a parrot, although I may someday -- my mother has an African Gray ;>)). Anyway, I'm looking forward to reading your thoughts on these books. My training is in biochem and genetics and, as well as the Animal Challenge, I have a personal, on-going, non-fiction science challenge that I'm working on. So I'm always looking for well-written, engaging science books to read ;>). I hope you enjoy the challenge!

We have to be brave and bust out of those comfort zones. (deep breaths!) Hooray for us. :)

Moo's post was interesting. I've never had any desire to join challenges either, and I read mostly fiction! Come to think of it, though, my IRL book group pick for next month is nonfiction (Animal, Vegetable, Miracle). I haven't started it yet, but I will soon. So we'll both be reading outside our comfort zones for a little while. :)

BTW, I saw your tweet -- I hope you've got FF up & running now!
