Animal-related reads from the blogosphere

By Debra Durham • Jun 5th, 2008 • Category: Book Review

With the Month of Elephants series, my other reading is taking a back seat for the moment. In case you are looking for inspiration on some animal-related reading, I wanted to share some reviews from around the blogosphere to inspire your summer reading!

We start off with a brand new entry over at Dog Ear Diary that looks at Carnivorous Nights. This book is the results of collaboration between two naturalists and an artist, and is written in a plural voice. The curious wildlife of Tasmania (including the “Tasmanian Tiger”), and efforts to save these strange and wonderful species inspired an interesting journey turned book. From Jeane’s review (4/5), it sounds like the book does just what its authors intended:

“Just as fascinating as the lore about thylacines and the history of their demise presented in these pages are the descriptions of the astonishing and curious Tasmanian wildlife. It was enough to make me want to visit Tasmania one day, to see the bandicoots, pademelons, echidnas, quolls and potoroos for myself.”

Before You Know Kindness book review by caribousmom

While it takes a lot more than the examples in this book to make me think “radical” activism, I think folks will appreciate this review and the book itself!

Bohjalian’s prose is honest, searing and compelling. Before You Know Kindness is ultimately a story of redemption and the power of forgiveness.

Another book that looks like it’s worth a look is the most recent biography of Jane Goodall, preminent primatologist and model animal advocate. Several months ago, I started Jane Goodall: The woman who redefined man. It’s a chunkster, and needless to say I haven’t (yet) finished. This new and shorter biography surely involves less of a commitment. Here is a short review here from Monsters and Critics: Jane Goodall: A Biography

  1. Hi Debra, Thanks for the link to my site! This is an interesting concept for a blog…I am such an animal lover, and I like how you’ve combined your love of books with your love of animals.

  2. Hi Wendy,

Thanks to you for a great review and for stopping by! My sister gave me a copy of Before You Know Kindness last year and convinced me to read it even though it was fiction (My library is 99% non-fiction - at least). I’m glad she did.

Looks like you review lots of animal books -I’m looking forward to more of them. Fiction or non, please feel free to let me know so I can post links here!

    ~Deb
