About

readinganimals.com blog caricature of Debra Durham PhDMy name is Deb Durham and this is ReadingAnimals. Welcome!

ReadingAnimals is a project borne from my interest in how the ideas and writing of scholars and activists alike might intersect, catalyze and and evolve in ways that benefit animals.

It’s my hope that ReadingAnimals will be an interesting site for people who care about animals and those who spend time thinking about them or working for them professionally. This is a place where even the wackiest ideas and uncharted intellectual territory get a little discussion. ReadingAnimals is also a friendly place for animal lovers who are just looking for new titles and authors for their own bookshelves.

As for me, I have parlayed my love of animals into a career as an ethologist and primatologist. I work full time as an animal advocate and also do some outreach, teaching and research. My life at home includes four dogs, two cats and one fellow (human) primate, who together comprise my polyspecific family. In my spare time, I try hard to remember the Malagasy I once learned and “sing” for the band Apple Moonshine.

For those who just insist on knowing more, there’s always this:
